Jindan Kaur of Cheechon-ke-Malian

On Friday, I went to attend the book launching ceremony of Jaswant Singh’s book on Jinnah and the Partition of 1947 at a local private golf club. As I had read the book when it was first launched, a question lurked in my mind about what the future held for the ‘sub-continent of hate’ that we live in.
As the book launch was consigned to ‘partial chaos’ as participants launched, on invitation, into tea and cakes before the ceremony began, it was best to quietly leave and ponder over the suffering the partition of 1947 had brought to the poor of our land. As the posh of Lahore tucked into sweet delights, outside the heat beat down harsh and fast. My thoughts swayed from my usual Sunday article to focus on the outcome of a remarkable person we are researching with regard to the events of 1947, a ‘holocaust’ the sort the world has seldom seen, definitely the largest exodus in human history and one that our elders are still ashamed to discuss openly. For this I condemn my elders, for they have not been truthful about our past.
That is why what Jaswant Singh has to say in his book needs much deeper and honest appreciation by all, especially Indians. Sadly, both have their eyes shut tightly to the reality of partition. Let me dwell on my research subject, and as she lives on the edge of Lahore, her story needs to be described. We must not make the mistake our elders have made. We must confront the truth, and face it for a better future.
Last month while on a research visit to a village near Cheechon-ke-Malian, just 18 miles outside Lahore to the west, I set off in search of an old woman a worker in my place of work described as ‘Sikhnee’. The description had an allure to it, and as we are researching the subject, it made sense to meet this ‘Sikhnee’. At first her son, the bearded village ‘mullah’, refused to let us talk to the old woman. After a considerable persuasion, we managed with the promise not to direct others to their house, and that we would not name him or his mother. To this promise we stick.
We met this old woman, aged approximately 78 if our calculations are correct, whose sun-tanned skin had freshness to it. The wrinkles on her face depicted her silent suffering. Maybe it was a thought in my mind. She was not bent as old women tend to be, but was a strong, well-set healthy woman used to working hard in the fields and in the house. Her name now is Fatima Bibi. Her husband was also the village ‘mullah’ and she married him in 1947. He died almost six years ago. “Jeth de pheli nu moya se,” said Fatima Bibi. She served me with a cold drink, and her great grandson also got one in the bargain.
Her story goes like this. Her real name was Jindan Kaur and her father’s name was Heera Singh Bhatti. They belonged to a village outside Sheikhupura just before Jandiala a hundred yards from the main ‘moogha’(water channel) as she put it.
In August 1947, their village was attacked by a Muslim mob. A few Sikh elders decapitated their daughters before the mob could reach the young girls. Ultimately, they were saved by the army, who came in two trucks full of soldiers. The entire village of Sikhs was taken to the Sheikhupura railway station and they were put into a railway bogey stuffed like animals and bound for Lahore, from where they were to go onwards to Amritsar in the new India, their new home.
Jindan then described the blood-curdling event of how their train was attacked near Cheechon-ke-Malian railway station. Every male member, including children, as well as old women, was hacked to pieces. “Tootay kar ditay sadday.” The young Jindan was taken away by the local toughs and they did what frenzied men do. “Javani lut lai. Kakh na chaddaya. Rool dita. Jeenday gee marya ve nahi.”
There were no tears in her eyes, for mine had welted on listening to her description of events. She looked at me and said: “Baoo, athroo da koi faida nai jaddon mera bapoo tootay ho gay.” The fate of her dear father had sealed time for her. She was the 15-year old Jindan when she talked lovingly of him. Her son was getting uneasy as she started to open up. I changed the topic to calm him. The ruse work well. After a while I started off again to listen to what happened to Jindan Kaur alias Fatima Bibi.
The train had about 105 women, most of them young. Jindan was then a mere 15-year old. She was raped by a number of men, she does not recall the number. The young village mullah took her to his house after the ‘animals’ had satiated their lust. He nursed her to health. He then advised that she convert to Islam and he would marry her. It was a noble deed by any reckoning. He took her glazed eyes and her silence as acceptance for his offer. A year later, soldiers came to the village and offered all kidnapped Hindu and Sikh women to get on an army lorry to be taken to India. They, however, warned, that Sikhs were killing all their own women who had been dishonoured. Life continued to offer no choices.
Jindan was pregnant. She had no family to go to. Life did not offer a choice. For her life began and ended that fateful day. The rest has been mere existence and she waits for the day when she will be released from her mortal remains. The old Punjabi woman described her fate as only she could: “Baoo, mera akhri saa barra mitha hoyay ga.” Her son scoulded her for the remark.
The victims of 1947 abound in the villages of Punjab. In 2010 they are forgotten. The description ‘Sikhnee’ is a slur that she bears without malice. Her four sons and five daughters do not like the way people call her. Hate has an unforgiving element. Inconspicuous references hide a story, often one of pain and suffering. If only she could again call herself Jindan Kaur with pride and without feeling guilty. That day will surely come, of this I have no doubt.
There are thousands like her in Pakistan and India. They are the forgotten people our elders shut their eyes to. That is why preserving the truth of 1947 is critical if we are to claw our way back to normalcy. That is why what Jaswant Singh has to say matters too. That is why I left the ‘tea and cakes’ mob to think about Jindan Kaur. Life still does not offer her any choice.

NEED TO RESTRAIN GK FROM HIS ANTI PAKISTAN CRUSADE
Manjit Singh GK head of Delhi Gurdwara Committee is touring world-wide and preaching against Pakistan. So far he has spent about 100 crore of the precious funds of the Sikh sangat. We shouldn't forget that Pakistan is a sovereign nation while about 60% of all Sikh shrines are in Pakistan. Also Pakistan has always supported the Sikh cause.
When the Sikh sangats demanded corridor to Gurdwara Kartarpur sahib, Pakistan Govt readily agreed. In normal circumstances no Govt would easily give access to its territory and that too to the citizens of a country it considers hostile. We shouldn't forget that the Govt of India has not so far approved this corridor. So if there is need to agitate against some body it has to be against Govt of India and not Pakistan as far as Sikh religious issues are concerned. We learn that GK is opposed to Pakistan for the later allowing Kar Sewa of Pak Gurdwara to Sarna group. This should not become cause of arrogance. We should rather oversee if the sewa is being done in proper way. We should rather be pleased on this.

We therefore request Sukhbir Singh Badal to stop the activities of this GK. We can't afford to displease our religious ally. However if it is felt that there is such a need i.e to displease Pakistan the Committee should get a fresh mandate from Sangat. –B.S.Goraya
ALL IS NOT WELL WITH THE PUNJABI PAPER AJIT - OVER COVERAGE OF YOGA EVENT

ALL IS NOT WELL WITH THE PUNJABI PAPER AJIT -OVER COVERAGE OF YOGA EVENT
In the early eighties and nineties when the Govt was fighting the Khalistani youths who had risen against the Govt for carrying out Operation Blue Star and Sikh Massacre of Delhi the Govt agencies curtailed the press freedom. Initially it was done by Indian Army in the wake of storming of Golden Temple under the code named Operation Blue Star. The army had terrorized media to such an extent no journalist raised voice for freedom after the media-men were acclimatized to gaging of press freedom. Slowly the police took over this duty from army.
Afterwards came the days when the militants were getting their statements published and simultaneously the obituaries or the bhog ceremonies of the killed militants were routinely being published. While the radio and TV were exclusively being run by the Govt itself the free media was newspapers only.
Basically there were 3 groups publishing newspapers namely; 1.The Tribune group which had its Punjabi and Hindi editions in addition to the main English paper. The Govt had no problem with this paper because it was being run by pro-establishment people, 2. was Hind Samachar Group (publisher of Hind Samachar (Urdu), Punjab Kesri (Hindi) and Jagbani (Punjabi) which was deadly opposed to the militants. Two of its editors had been killed by the militants. Thus there was no problem either from this paper to the Govt. The concerned Govt agencies were voluntarily getting information from this group and the 3rd was Ajit Group the publisher of daily Ajit in Punjabi which was considered as the Sikh paper.
In fact both Ajit and Hind Samachar group were basically responsible for Punjab of that day. Both were commercially opposed to each other and both promoted communalism often commenting on each other every day.
The Govt's thus entire focus was Ajit which they believed was the mouth organ of the Sikhs and thus militants. We suspect the Govt agents infiltered into the editorial of the paper. The result being planting of pro-Delhi news in the paper and distortion of language to make it just a dialect of Hindi.
Recently the Hindu conservative party BJP announced countrywide programme of Yoga classes on June 21. However Sikh political party the Akali Dal refused to be part of the communal Yoga programme of BJP. They refused to open the schools which were enjoying summer holidays. The education minister categorically refused to order the schools to participate in this programme in view of holidays.
The BJP leaders felt humbled as far as Punjab was concerned sending a note of embarrassment for the Central Govt that the Sikhs were not participating in the mega-Yoga event. To prove that Punjab was no different from other states the Central departments were insisted upon to take part in the Yoga programmes in their respective areas.
But the agents felt that media coverage was more important than the actual celebration of yoga event. We suspect Ajit paper was ordered to afford maximum coverage to Yoga exercises and it happened.
Now look for yourself. For comparison we are reproducing prominent papers of the region with their respective coverage of the yoga event. You will find Ajit the Sikh paper has given about 10 times more coverage than the other papers whereas the fact is the Sikhs didn't participate in the event.
It shows all is not well with the Sikh news paper. I don't know how far it is correct but the rumour is that the owner of the paper is subject to blackmail and exercises free hand only in the financial matters. It is rumoured that the reporters were instructed to send maximum reports on yoga event on that day. It is rumoured that the editorial management of the paper is in the hand of Govt agencies since the ending years of eighties.
Are we living in the 21 century where the condition of media is that pitiable?
YOGA COVERAGE IN THE TRIBUNE:
COVERAGE IN PUNJAB KESRI
COVERAGE IN JAGBANI
COVERAGE IN AJIT

BHULLAR'S CASE- ANY AMOUNT OF CLEMENCY WILL NOT GIVE JUSTICE
- Confined behind bars for 20 years
- Father killed by police
- His uncle killed by police
- His friend killed by police
======
It was more of a media judgement because the judges were affected by the wave of media resentment against the Sikhs. - None of the 133 witnesses could identify Bhullar
- Police could not trace the source of bombs
- Police could not arrest his alleged companions who assisted in crime
IT IS A BLOT ON INDIAN JUSTICE.
Information About Prof. Devinderpal Singh Bhullar and Facts regarding His Case
by Sikh Students Federation
This document provides information about Professor Devender Pal Singh Bhullar, who is currently (as on 16/Nov./2009) confined in Tihar Jail, Delhi (Ind.) and is awaiting execution of death sentence pronounced by the Indian courts and confirmed by Supreme Court of India in Devender Pal Singh Versus State National Capital of Delhi and others. case in a "split decision". Once to be a lecturer at Guru Nanak Engineering College (GNE) Ludhiana, Bhullar had to leave his house when Sumedh Saini, then SSP of Punjab Police abducted and killed his father, uncle and engineer friend in 1991.
Bhullar left India and was passing through Germany when he was stopped by German authorities at Frankfurt airport and was found travelling without proper papers. He was deported to India and here he was tired for his alleged involvement in a Bomb Blast leaving 9 persons dead. Police said that the target of this 1993 blast was then congress's youth leader Maninder Jeet Singh Bitta, who was injured during this blast.
It is important to note that all 133 witnesses called by prosecution failed to support police story and to confirm any involvement of Prof. Devinder Pal Singh Bhullar in 1993 Delhi blast.
Bhullar is convicted and sentenced to death solely on the bases of extra-judicial confession. This confession was taken while Bhullar was in Police custody. In the court during trial Bhullar accused the police for compelling him to sign blank papers while he was in their custody and denied that he had ever made any such confession.
Justice M. B. Shah, who was heading three judges constitutional bench at the SC labeled the confession as "teller made confession" and rejected it.
Justice MB Shah acquitted Bhullar while two other judges confirmed the death sentence.

Supreme Court commutes death penalty of Devinderpal Singh Bhullar to life imprisonment

Bhullar was convicted and awarded death penalty for triggering a bomb blast in New Delhi in September 1993, which killed nine persons and injured 25 others.
New Delhi | Updated: March 31, 2014 2:00 pm
The Supreme Court on Monday commuted the death penalty of terror convict Devinder Pal Singh Bhullar to life term over mental illness and an inordinate delay by the government in deciding his mercy plea.
A bench led by Chief Justice P Sathasivam allowed the curative petition filed by Bhullar’ s wife Navneet Kaur while also taking on record the government’s submission that Bhullar’s was a case that had to be allowed. The Centre had on Thursday told he court that his death sentence should be commuted to life.
The Centre had conceded that his wife’s plea for commutation has to be allowed in view of the delay in deciding the mercy petition as well as his mental illness.
“This is a case which has to be allowed because the mercy petition… was decided after a delay of eight years,” Attorney General G E Vahanvati had told the Bench.
The AG had referred to a January verdict of the SC, ruling that inordinate delay in deciding a mercy petition and mental illness were grounds to commute a death sentence. He also pointed out that this verdict had overruled a previous judgment, which rejected a plea by Bhullar’s wife on commuting his sentence on these grounds.
“Besides, our review petition against the court’s January 21 judgment has also been dismissed. So we have to follow the judgment now and we have no problems,” Vahanvati said.
The Bench hailed the government’s stand, saying it expected a reasoned decision to help us personalise your reading experience.
The court said it will pronounce a formal order next week. Earlier, the proceedings had been adjourned twice to wait for a decision by the President on the mercy petition. However, the AG refrained from informing the court about its fate on Thursday.
Significantly, The Indian Express had on March 12 reported that President Pranab Mukherjee and the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) were learnt to have differed on commutation of death sentence. While Mukherjee had found favour with the recommendation of Delhi’s Lt-Governor to commute the death penalty, the MHA was against it.

MARTYRDOM OF GEN. SUBEG SINGH & HIS LAST INTERVIEW
Wednesday, 10 June 2015
HOW GENERAL SHABEG SINGH DIED & A RARE INTERVIEW BEFORE SHAHEEDI
In the night of 5-6 June 1984 Gen Subeg (or Shahbeg) Singh was guiding the Sikhs defending Golden Temple. He was at Jhanda Bunga where two flags hoist in front of Akal Takhat and Darshani Deori. His planning was such that what ever troops came to Golden Temple through parikarma could not return back. Finally in the dead of night the army realised it was impossible to gain control over Golden Temple complex. Infuriated the Chief of Army Gen. Vaidya stated that the army could go to the extent of using atom bomb. The fighting Command of Gen. Suderji and Gen. K.S.Brar then brought the tanks in the parikarma. Gen. Subeg was guided the Singhs how to immobilize tanks with grenades. Then 2-3 bullets hit the General. The General realised his end was near and thus went to Sant Bhinderanwale at Akal Takhat to say good bye. He told how the parikarma was then full of bodies of the Army men. He said, it is victory to the Guru and that the world will know it. He informed the Sant that tanks were now brought in and we were left with only a few Singhs. He said, "I feel I have accomplished my duty and please pray for me now as I am departing." He wished the Khalsa will rule one day. He regretted for having served the thankless nation. Profusely bleeding as he was, Bhai Amrik Singh helped him to lay. There he bid final goodbye with the greeting "Waheguru ji ka Khalsa, Waheguru ji ki Fateh". Please read the details in Punjabi.
The next day his body was found from the basement of Akal Takhat sahib.
-------------------------------------
Major General Shahbeg Singh, whose body was found in the basement of the Akal Takht on June 6, 1984 along with that of Bhai Amrik Singh was interviewed by The Telegraph four weeks before he died.
Q: How long have you been living here (Golden Temple)?
A: For about three weeks. You see, after winning these two cases we had `sukhoed’ (vowed) a certain amount of prayers. So every Sunday, for three Sundays, we have had to go to Gurdwara Baba Deep Singh for six hours of meditation and recitation of the Sukhmani Sahib. Then we have done an Akhand path here at the Darbar Sahib and we still have an Akhand path and langar to do at Baba Bakala. And a certain amount of prayers I still have to do here. I wake up everyday at 3 am, have a bath and then at 4.30 I am there for the palki Sahib Sewa. When the Guru Granth is carried from the Akal Takht to the Gurdwara. I stay on there for my normal path. My Sukhmani Sahib I do either there or come back here. Then I go back for the Rehras (sunset prayers).
Q: So you’ve been here for some months?
A: No, only three weeks. As my village is here next door, I go and live there. It’s just about 10 miles from here, a village known as Khayala, where I was born. You people suspect that I must be here for this and that reason. But it’s only because of these path (prayers) and my wife’s illness, which is a gift from Mrs. Indira Gandhi. I have been living in non-family stations on active service continuously for 12 years. She was diagnosed as having a tumour in the bladder, an infection which has never properly healed. In my appeal to Mrs Indira Gandhi I said, look, we are getting old and, if not for me, then for the sake of my wife who has done so much for this country, you should look into my case and give me justice.
Q: Are you a supporter of Sant Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale?
A: As far as my relations with Sant Jarnail Singh are concerned, there is nothing to suspect. I’ve told you that I am a patriot. Probably in a finer mould then the Prime Minister herself. I have met Bhindranwale. There is no doubt of it and I also feel that there is a strong touch of spiritualism in this person. He is a man who stands by the truth. The Government is deliberately terming him a traitor because his brand of politics probably doesn’t suit them. But the fact is that there is hardly a Sikh in this world who does not accept him as a leader. I also accept him as a leader. I firmly believe that he is the only Sikh born after Guru Gobind Singh who can get justice for the Sikhs as a community in this country where we have been persecuted ever since independence. We are suspected individually and as a community.
A: No, we don’t believe in violence. We have proved it by courting arrest last year and staying in jail for three months. I think that is probably why they decided to put me out and not give me my pension. The orders were received when I was in jail. Having served this country with gallantry and distinction, this Government thinks it necessary to deny me even my pension.
I became a Bengali for the sake my country. I cut my hair and then I took amrit again. I trained General Zia-ur-Rahman. He and his wife Khaleda saw me when they came here. He was with me as one of the sub section commanders responsible for victory in Chittagong. I am the only General to have been treated in such a shabby manner. I cannot even afford medical expenses when I had a massive heart attack last year.
Q: Why were you removed from the army?
A: You should ask the army. I’m the only person whom they did not even put on trial. If they could put other Generals on trial, if they could take them to court martial and frame charges against them, why couldn’t they do the same for me?
Q: Why didn’t they give you a trial?
A: Because they had nothing against me and they just wanted to throw me out. Leave alone a fair trial, they didn’t give me any kind of trial. They threw me out under a special clause which has never been invoked in the British army and has been invoked in the Indian army only in my case. This is a special power given to the Army chief under which my services were “administratively terminated” one day before they ended. Then they started two other cases against me : one was that I got a truck in somebody else’s name and the other was that I built a house costing Rs. 9 lakhs. I told them that I had built the house for Rs.1.75 lakhs. Vigilance valued it at Rs.1.8 lakhs or something. In the court it came down to exactly what I had said.
Q: So you won the cases?

| While in East Bangal as head of Mukti Bahini |
Q: But how did you suddenly fall out of favour after being a hero in the Bangladesh war?
A: Because I made a statement, not a statement really, I just said, during the Emergency, that nobody was indispensable in the service of this country. This to me was a patriotic statement. But this statement was carried through the backdoor to the Army Chief and the PM, and God knows what they thought that I was a rebel, or whatever. The aim was to deny me my promotion because I was a Sikh. This is how Sikhs are being persecuted in the army.
Q: Do you feel that other Sikhs in the army are also discriminated against like this?
A: Of course. It is not just a question of being discriminated against. We are suspect. It has been stated by no less a person than Air Chief Marshal Arjan Singh on TV that Sikhs as a class should not be suspected.
Q: Can you tell us a little bit about the Mukti Bahini, how you went in and set it up.
A: These are all top secret things about which I am not supposed to talk. I’m not even allowed to write a book. (If I talked) I would be called unpatriotic and I don’t want that.
Q: But can’t you tell us about the first time you went in and what it was like?
A: You can ask General Jagjit Singh Aurora. He was my boss. I’m not in the habit of talking about these things.
Q: But since you’ve been victimised….
A: Of course, I’ve been victimised. I even appealed to Mrs. Indira Gandhi. I said, let me be court martialled now, or put me up before a civil court, or a tribunal headed by an eminent legal man. As a last resort I even suggested that my case be looked into by someone like Mr Arun Nehru. I also stated in my appeal that I was unwell and that my wife was suffering because I had continuous active service for 12 years with only a six months’ break in between. I was serving in Jammu and Kashmir when I went for the Chinese War. There, again, in General Kaul’s book I am mentioned because, at a time when people were retreating and bringing dishonour to the country, I was going forward and bringing honour. Read Untold Story, page 419, I think.
Q: What was your rank at the time?

Q: But do you really think it was because were a Sikh? General Harbaksh made it to a higher rank and so did General Aurora.
A: Well, they probably denied promotion to me because there would have been too many Sikh Generals.
Q: But were you a supporter of the Sikh cause in those days?
A: I have always been spiritually inclined. My mother taught me Japji when I was only five years old. And then I was in the habit of always organising an Akhand path wherever I went. When Gyaniji has a picture taken carrying the Granth Sahib on his head he is considered a devout Sikh. But when I did it as a General they spoke of me as a religion-oriented man.

What General V.K. Singh says today:
My father resigned along with three other brigadiers because he felt he was unfairly ‘passed over’. One of his compatriots from his cadet days, General Arun Vaidya, went on to become Army Chief and ended up being killed by Sikh terrorists because they held him responsible for the attack on the Golden Temple.
In that battle was another General who fought on the side of Sant Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale because of his bitterness against the way he was treated by the army and the government. General Shabeg Singh was helping Bhindranwale’s ragtag army build fortifications in the Golden Temple when I met him in the weeks just before Operation Blue Star. When I asked him why he was preparing to fight the very army that he had served with dedication for so many years, he said it was because false cases of corruption were made against him and he was dishonourably discharged a day before he was due to retire. As the man who helped create the ‘Mukti Bahini’ he was among the biggest heroes of the Bangladesh war, so the humiliation of his discharge was especially painful.
General Shabeg Singh went to court against the army and won his cases and it was to give thanks for this that he came to the Golden Temple and met Bhindranwale. He was killed by his side on June 6, 1984. What I can say with certainty is that he would not have been helping Bhindranwale had he been treated better by the army and the Ministry of Defence.

While reading the book "Operation Bluestar- Inside Story" penned down by Lt.Gen.K.S.Brar, my eyes are zeroed in on one character i.e.Maj.Gen.Shabeg Singh who fought along with Sant Bhindranwale against India army in the battle of Golden temple, Punjab, in 1984. I have made in detail study of his personal background on the basis of information available. It has just shocked me that this person during the course of his service in the Indian army, fought in every war that India particiaped in. Maj.Gen.Shabeg Singh, AVSM and PVSM, was an Indian army officer noted for his service in training of Mukti Bahini volunteers during the Bangladesh liberation war. He also shaved his hair to maintain the secrecy, for this national cause which was against the principles of Sikh religion. Besides Hindi & English, he was fluent in persian, urdu, gorkhali. However, Major General Shabeg Singh was discharged from Indian Army without court martial one day before his retirement, thus losing part of his pensions. They didn’t give him any kind of trial. They threw him out under a special clause which has never been invoked in the British army and has been invoked in the Indian army only in his case. He was implicated in false corruption cases,& discharged from the service but courts cleared him of all charges. After retirement also he faced lot of humilation from the government, even he has no sufficient money to treat his wife for cancer. A monster of Sant Bhindranwale was created by Indira Gandhi to counter the influence of Akali Dal in Punjab, same was turned against her. Many times he was released on the orders of central government. Bhindranwale has created the terror in Punjab with the help of Pakistan. It is very sad that national hero like Maj.Gen.Shabeg Singh has to face humilation & terrorist like Bhindranwale enjoyed the patronage of government. Maj.Gen.Shabeg Singh was killed in 1984,What I can say with certainty is that he would not have been helping Bhindranwale had he been treated better by the army and the Ministry of Defence.
